Do you verify renovation pros' licenses?
Handyum is a matching service. We do not verify licenses on your behalf. California requires a CSLB license for any job over $500 in combined labor and materials — renovation always crosses this. Ask the pro for their CSLB number, verify at cslb.ca.gov, and confirm proof of general liability and workers' comp insurance before work starts. Discuss credentials directly with the pro you're considering.
How is payment handled?
Payment, milestone schedule, and any deposit are agreed directly between you and the pro. We recommend a written scope and milestone schedule (deposit, mid-project, final on punch-list completion) and keeping all written communication in the Handyum chat for a record. Handyum does not hold escrow or process payment between you and the pro.
What if the pro doesn't finish the job?
If a pro abandons a job, you may have remedies through the state contractor board (CSLB in CA), small-claims court, or a mechanic's-lien defense. Keep all written communication, photos of the work in progress, and signed scope/payment docs. Report the pro to Handyum and we will remove them from the platform.
How fast will a pro reply?
